Design of a rug collection for the Milan-based carpet brand ‘Habit Collection’.

 

Centred on the theme of ‘Dialogue with Nature’, this carpet series features five graphics inspired by natural landscapes and quiet moments in everyday life. From sunlight filtering through the trees and the serene atmosphere of the forest to the warmth of honey, the organic form of courgettes, and the stillness of a small pond - each design reflects a quiet yet vivid beauty, weaving rich moments into everyday life.

 

The collection is crafted from 100 % New Zealand wool and hand-knotted by skilled artisans at a production facility in India, where every single yarn is meticulously tied by hand to bring depth and enduring quality to each piece.

 

 

[ZUCCHINI]

The ‘Zucchini’ series is designed to help us rediscover the small beauties of everyday life. By thinly slicing fresh courgettes and layering them whilst shifting them slightly as we go, we have created a pattern of irregularly arranged organic curves that reflect the forms found in nature. Three colourways have emerged: a beautiful, deep green that has soaked up plenty of sunlight; a gentle beige; and a light white and grey.

 

[HONEY]

A design inspired by the depth of the enchanting, lustrous glow of sweet honey. When spring arrives, bees flit about as if celebrating the joy of life, gathering beautiful nectar. The very radiance of life is expressed through a deep colour gradient. The colour transitions from a deep burnt amber at the top to a gently warm gold at the base. Rather than relying on patterns or distinct boundaries, this piece captures the way light simply drifts slowly through the colours.

 

[Forest]

‘Forest’ utilises the warmest tones in the collection. Against a base of warm sand colours and pale pink, the shapes of shadows emerge softly.Taking the dappled sunlight filtering through gently swaying trees as its motif, he walked through forests and parks with a sheet of white card, collecting a variety of ‘shadows’. That time was less about capturing shadows and more about discovering light. The two elements of light and shadow are woven together through gentle gradients. Sunlight filtering through the foliage of lush trees casts organic patterns at his feet. This can be described not as capturing a moment in the forest through colour, but rather as capturing the very essence of the forest as he experienced it, together with the light he felt.

 

[Echoes]

Inspired by time spent walking through the forest. The forest teems with all manner of life. Trees standing tall, the murmur of a babbling brook heard from somewhere, a sudden shower of rain, traces of life a scene emerged in my mind where the ‘presences’ of such diverse beings reflect off one another, resonate, and warmly envelop this small world. A moment when, treading upon the soft ground, light streams through the gaps between the trees, and one catches a glimpse of the workings of life amidst the stillness. As I follow that light, drawn deeper and deeper into the forest, my own form blends with the rhythm of the trees. The silent resonance of these ‘presences’, the footprints of life and new signs of promise, spread throughout the space. Vibrant hues ranging from bluish tones to soft sandy colours alternate and overlap, forming band-like patterns. It is as though the landscape and its reflection on the water’s surface have become one. A rug with a refined composition that feels anything but stilted, embodying a delicate balance of both volume and light.

 

[OASIS]

A design born from the experience of encountering a small, beautifully shimmering pond whilst walking through a wetland. Tiny leaves and vibrant flowers are reflected in the clear water. It was imagined as a vivid oasis within daily life, where the bustle of family life gathers and modest joys quietly spread. A pale blue gradient flows gently across the rug, accented by vivid flashes of red, yellow and ochre. It is as though light were refracting through the water of a shallow ford, revealing the colourful riverbed beneath. This rug captures a fleeting sparkle of nature through the perfect control of its composition. Whilst radiating vivid colours, it is a piece finished with meticulous attention to detail.
